WHAT IS THE MODERN HYMN MOVEMENT?

We are likely familiar with traditional hymns such as Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah, or He Who Would Valiant Be. We are also probably familiar with newer praise choruses such as He is Exalted, 10,000 Reasons, Above All, I Can Only Imagine, or the much more recent 'worship anthems' Waymaker, So Will I, What a Beautiful Name, The Stand, or Raise a Hallelujah.
Sadly, however, the Christian church has, in recent decades, suffered from a lack of firmly rooted, Scripture saturated, or Christ exalting music. Many artists in the Christian music genre, over the past several years, have been ensnared by commercialism, stardom, or weak theology and have become mired in the mainstream Contemporary Christian Music industry. Even more tragically, a greater percentage of these artists endorse and are largely marketed by mega-promoters such as Bethel Music, K-LOVE | Air1 Radio, Hillsong Church, and other big name organizations in the field which seek ratings, revenue, and numbers far more than Biblical accuracy & Scriptural content.

However, since the early-mid 2000s, new Biblically grounded music with a distinct theological focus has begun to emerge as a response to the Biblically bankrupt and doctrinally deficient music ravaging Christianity. Heard primarily in Biblically grounded congregations throughout Protestant Christianity, the Modern Hymn Movement elevates lyrical content over musical composition; rich theological truth over mindless, empty, or repetitive choruses.
Well known examples of modern hymns include In Christ Alone by Keith & Kristyn Getty, Yet Not I But Through Christ in Me by CityAlight, His Mercy is More by Matt Papa & Matt Boswell, and How Deep the Father's Love for Us by Stuart Townend. Other artists that have and continue to contribute to this movement include Sovereign Grace Music, The Enfield Hymn Sessions, Aaron Keyes, and others. With these and other artists' compositions, modern hymns continue to be shared, adopted by believers worldwide, and translated into multiple languages. In conjunction with a revival of traditional hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs, the modern hymn format continues to gain traction across the globe.

The Worship through Song project is dedicated to furthering the singing of Christ exalting music through these traditional & modern hymns, psalms, & spiritual songs for worship to our holy God.
